Vietnam Banana Supplier for the UAE: Specs and Terms

Graded Cavendish clusters in an export carton from a vietnam banana supplier uae buyers can trial

Most supplier pages open by claiming a position in the market. This one cannot, and pretending otherwise would waste a buyer’s time: on the trade data, a vietnam banana supplier uae importers might consider comes from an origin with almost no presence in the country. So this page is written as what it is — a request for one trial container — and sets out the specification, terms and compliance detail that request has to carry to be taken seriously.

What the trade data actually shows

Take 2023, the most recent year with a complete record for both countries in the World Bank’s mirror of UN Comtrade data. The UAE imported 176.8 million dollars of bananas that year, about 241,000 tonnes. Ecuador supplied 119.5 million of it, roughly 68 per cent by value. India followed at 30.8 million, the Philippines at 13.9 million, Sri Lanka at 5.4 million and Guatemala at 3.2 million.

Vietnam appears in that table at 253,700 dollars — 0.14 per cent of the UAE’s banana imports.

Vietnam’s own export figures for the same year tell the same story from the other side: 459,440 dollars of bananas to the UAE, out of 310.4 million dollars of banana exports in total. China took 245.4 million of that, Korea 30.6 million, Japan 14.0 million and Malaysia 10.9 million. The UAE was 0.15 per cent of where Vietnam’s bananas went.

Two caveats, because these numbers get misread. Neither country has banana trade recorded in that dataset for 2024, so a claim that Vietnam vanished from the UAE that year reads a reporting gap as a trend. And a figure this small can partly reflect fruit arriving through a re-exporter, in which case it lands under someone else’s flag.

Why a vietnam banana supplier uae buyers have not used is worth one container

Not on price. Ecuador holds two thirds of this market by value and has the scale to defend it. The case for a trial is narrower, and more honest.

It is supply diversity: a second Asian origin alongside the Philippines and India, on a different sailing pattern and weather exposure, for a buyer who has had a programme interrupted once already. It is also a product match — the same Cavendish the Gulf retail trade already sells, grown year round. What a first container really tests is the discipline behind the fruit: whether specification, labelling and documents arrive as agreed. That is the right thing to test, and cheap to test once.

Buyers who want the demand side of the market first will find it in our overview of importing bananas to the UAE and the Gulf.

The specification to put in the enquiry

Bananas ship at the mature-green stage, and the cold chain is the whole product. The reference figures are specific: carriage at 13 to 14 degrees Celsius, 90 to 95 per cent relative humidity for green fruit, and a hard floor at 13 degrees — the lowest temperature green bananas can safely be held at. Below it, chilling injury can appear within 2 to 24 hours.

Green life at 14 degrees in ethylene-free air runs up to four weeks, about six under a modified or controlled atmosphere. Ripening is then driven deliberately, with ethylene at 100 parts per million for 24 to 48 hours at a pulp temperature of 14 to 18 degrees. On a long Gulf voyage, how much of that four weeks survives to arrival is the number that decides whether a programme works — the arithmetic is in our note on banana green life.

On the Gulf side, two standards are worth naming in the enquiry. Carton construction falls under the Gulf standard for general requirements for fresh fruit and vegetable boxes. The Gulf technical regulation for bananas covers commercial varieties of Musa (AAA) supplied fresh in the green state and excludes cooking plantains; the edition on the standards store record is from 2009, so confirm the current version before it goes into a contract.

Beyond the standards, state your own numbers rather than asking for ours: class, finger length and calibre range, cluster count per carton, carton net weight, pallet pattern and the label fields you need printed. A specification written by the buyer gets quoted accurately. A request for “export quality” gets quoted optimistically.

What the UAE enforces that other markets do not

Four points catch suppliers used to Southeast Asia:

  • Arabic labelling. Labels must be in Arabic, and a translation sticker is accepted only if it is approved and applied before export
  • Dates printed, not stuck on. Fresh fruit is exempt from the expiry date requirement, but a production date or harvest year plus a packing date is required, and dates printed only on a sticker are not accepted
  • Residue limits under the 2024 edition of the national maximum residue limits standard, not the 2019 version still circulating in trade guidance
  • A phytosanitary certificate with every consignment, though no import permit is required for fresh fruit for consumption

On duty, be careful with landed-cost arithmetic. The UAE’s published list of commodities exempted from customs duty includes bananas, fresh or dried, under heading 0803, while Dubai Customs states the common Gulf tariff as five per cent of CIF value with no food exemption in its own list. Have the broker who files the declaration confirm the rate against the exact tariff line rather than taking either figure on trust.

Volume, terms and lead time

The practical unit is one 40-foot high-cube reefer, full container load. Below that the cold chain stops being controllable and freight per carton stops making sense; what fits in a container is set out in our note on minimum order quantity for a banana container.

For a first shipment from a vietnam banana supplier uae buyers are trialling, agree the Incoterms rule, the payment terms and the inspection point in writing before the booking — and agree what happens if arrival quality falls outside specification. A supplier who will not discuss that second question in advance is telling you something. We quote per container against a written specification and a named sailing, and publish no prices here, because a banana price without a specification, a port and a week attached is not a price.

What to send us for a quote

  • Destination and the clearance route: free zone, UAE mainland, or import for re-export
  • Carton specification: net weight, cluster or finger presentation, class, length and calibre range
  • Label requirements, including the Arabic fields and which dates you need printed on the carton
  • The residue panel your laboratory runs and the limits you apply
  • Volume per week, programme duration, and the first sailing you want covered

Working with Dragon Hub

Dragon Hub packs and exports Cavendish bananas to supermarket and wholesale buyers across Asia and the Middle East. The UAE is a market we are asking to be tried, not one we claim to lead. Send the five items above and you get a specification sheet, a carton print layout with the UAE date fields in it, and a per-container quotation against a named sailing. Pack sizes are on the product range page.

Frequently asked questions

Does the UAE import bananas from Vietnam?

Barely. In 2023 the UAE recorded 253,700 dollars of banana imports from Vietnam against 176.8 million dollars in total, about 0.14 per cent, and Vietnam’s own figures put its banana exports to the UAE at 459,440 dollars. Neither country has 2024 banana trade recorded in that dataset, so no trend can be read from the following year.

Who supplies most of the UAE’s bananas?

Ecuador, by a wide margin: 119.5 million dollars of the UAE’s 176.8 million dollars of banana imports in 2023, roughly two thirds by value. India was second at 30.8 million and the Philippines third at 13.9 million, with Sri Lanka and Guatemala behind them.

Does fruit from Vietnam need an import permit for the UAE?

No import permit is recorded as required for fresh fruit for consumption entering the UAE, but a phytosanitary certificate is, issued by the plant protection authority at origin and carrying any declarations the UAE asks of that country. Permits apply to planting material, seeds and seedlings, live animals and hides.
