Vietnam shipped more than 222.6 million US dollars of bananas in the first seven months of 2026, second only to durian among the country’s fruit and vegetable exports by value. A buyer deciding whether to trial a Vietnamese shipper wants something narrower than the total: where that fruit already goes, and whether their own market is one the exporters know. The honest map of vietnam banana export destinations 2026 is lopsided, and the lopsidedness is useful information.
One warning before the numbers. Two different percentages get quoted about this trade and they measure opposite things. The section after next separates them, because mixing them is how most summaries of this market go wrong.
Vietnam banana export destinations 2026: the split by value
For January to July 2026, the share of Vietnam’s banana export value by market was:
- China — 66.7 per cent
- South Korea — 16.7 per cent
- Japan — 8.8 per cent
- Everywhere else — the remaining 7.8 per cent, across Malaysia, Singapore, the Gulf and the rest
Two thirds into one market, nine tenths into three. That concentration is the single most important fact about Vietnamese banana supply, and it cuts both ways. The packing standards, cold chain and documentation are tuned to demanding North Asian buyers, which is good for anyone new. The commercial attention follows the volume, which is why a smaller market sometimes gets a slower reply.

That total is also down 5.2 per cent year on year, so this is a map of a trade that grew fast and has stopped growing. For scale, the 2024 full-year figure was around 378 million US dollars, fourth among Vietnam’s fruit exports that year.
Two numbers that look alike and are not
Share of Vietnam’s exports and Vietnam’s share of a buyer market are different measurements that sometimes land close enough to be mistaken for each other.
China takes 66.7 per cent of Vietnam’s banana export value. Vietnam, meanwhile, holds 37.06 per cent of China’s banana imports, against 27.47 per cent for the Philippines — Vietnam overtook the Philippines there on 2024 volumes, shipping 625,166 tonnes against the Philippines’ 463,306. So China is at once the destination for most of Vietnam’s fruit and a market where Vietnam supplies barely more than a third of demand.
South Korea shows the trap at its sharpest: 16.7 per cent of Vietnam’s export value goes there, and separate reporting puts Vietnam’s share of the Korean market at under 17 per cent. Nearly the same number, two unrelated meanings. If a quotation or a market report gives you a percentage, check which direction it is pointing before you build anything on it. What each North Asian market actually enforces on arrival is covered in our note on exporting bananas to Japan and South Korea.

Malaysia: where Vietnamese fruit is already the default
Outside the big three, Malaysia is the market where Vietnam is not a challenger. Of 30,616,797 kilos of bananas Malaysia imported in 2024, worth 15,282,545 US dollars, Vietnam supplied 21,579,350 kilos — 70.5 per cent of the volume and 73.2 per cent of the value. The Philippines came second at 12.8 per cent of volume.
A Malaysian buyer asking whether Vietnamese fruit works on their shelf is asking a question the market has already answered. The useful conversation there is about grade, carton weight and arrival stage rather than about origin, and the lane detail sits in our guide for Malaysian buyers sourcing from Vietnam.
Singapore: where Vietnam is still third
Singapore is the counterexample, and worth stating plainly rather than dressing up. Of about 31.6 million US dollars of bananas imported in 2023, the Philippines held 55 per cent and Malaysia 21 per cent. Vietnam was third at 7.88 per cent — present, but nowhere near the default.
Some of that Malaysian 21 per cent is itself Vietnamese fruit arriving with a step in between. For a Singapore buyer the opening is therefore a pricing and freshness one rather than a novelty one, since the voyage from Ho Chi Minh City is four to five days direct. The specifics are in our page for Singapore buyers sourcing Vietnamese bananas.
What this means for a buyer, and where Dragon Hub sits
A concentrated export map means the standards are proven and the attention is uneven. Dragon Hub packs to a written specification per buyer rather than to one house grade, which matters most when your market sits in the 7.8 per cent rather than the 66.7. Send your target market, pack size and volume per cycle through our products pages.
