Every few months a headline announces that bananas are doomed, or that bananas have been saved. Both are about the same fungus, and neither helps the person who has to keep fruit on a shelf next quarter.

Here is the position in 2026 without the drama: where the disease has reached, what the resistant-variety news really said, and what a buyer can do about it. The TR4 Panama disease banana supply risk is real, and it is not the risk most buyers assume it is.

The TR4 Panama disease banana supply risk, in plain terms

TR4 is Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Tropical Race 4, a soil fungus that kills banana plants through the roots. Three properties make it what it is:

  • It does not leave. Spores survive in soil for decades. Infected land cannot be cleaned and replanted with Cavendish.
  • Losses are near-total. Infected plantations report yield reductions of 70 to 100 %, and are described as effectively unrecoverable.
  • Cavendish is the whole crop. The variety that fills the export trade is the variety TR4 attacks. In Australia it is over 97 % of production.

Now the part that matters to an importer, and that general coverage rarely says clearly: TR4 moves in soil, not in fruit. It travels on contaminated planting material, on irrigation and run-off water, and on soil carried by boots, tyres and tools. A container of bananas is not a transmission route, and the fruit is not a food-safety question.

Which means TR4 is not something your quality team can inspect for on arrival. It is a supply and price risk — and price from this origin is already moving for other reasons — so it belongs in your sourcing plan rather than your specification.

Where it has reached in 2026

Australia. As of September 2026, eleven Queensland farms are infected, concentrated around Tully. Innisfail, 50 km north and the largest growing area, is so far clear. Growers run soil decontamination, equipment sanitation and movement control together, and describe the combined effort as barely slowing the fungus down.

Vietnam. A survey of twelve provinces confirmed TR4 in six: Tay Ninh, Long An, Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Hanoi and Hung Yen. An FAO emergency control project runs to May 2026 across fifteen provinces, aiming to cut affected area by at least 40 %. Vietnam has roughly 157,000 hectares under bananas producing about 2.3 million tonnes.

One caution on reading that list: it names the provinces where a survey looked and found the fungus. A province absent from it has not been declared clean, and no honest supplier should present it that way.

The resistant-variety news, read carefully

In February 2026 a University of Queensland team mapped the resistance region in Calcutta 4, a wild banana, to chromosome 5. The coverage said a gene had been found that could save the banana. Three details got lost:

  • The mapped resistance is to Subtropical Race 4, a relative of TR4, not TR4 itself.
  • Calcutta 4 cannot be sold. Its fruit is not good to eat, so the trait has to be bred into a commercial variety.
  • Each banana generation takes over a year to grow and test. The next step is a molecular marker to speed up selection; no deployment date was given.

The nearer-term candidates are a genetically modified resistant Cavendish, QCAV-4, expected around 2027, and conventionally bred material around 2028. Even those are a change of planting stock, not a switch: orchards are replanted over years, not seasons.

As one Vietnamese industry analysis puts it, resistant varieties are an important pillar but not a replacement for biosecurity. For anyone planning 2026 and 2027 volume, resistance is not yet something you can contract against.

What importers should actually do

Four things, in order of how much difference they make.

  • Spread your sourcing across growing areas, not just suppliers. Two suppliers drawing from the same valley is one exposure wearing two names. Ask which regions your fruit comes from and whether that mix can change mid-contract.
  • Ask biosecurity questions that have specific answers. Is planting material tissue-cultured and certified disease-free? Are there disinfection points at block entrances? Is machinery shared between blocks? Is irrigation water shared between blocks, or independent? Vague reassurance is itself an answer.
  • Treat 2027 and 2028 as research dates, not supply dates. Plan volume on the assumption that the crop you buy in those years is still Cavendish on the same land.
